Cinnamon Bear Surprise

Unlocking Unexpected Joy and Confidence

Life is full of surprises, isn’t it? Sometimes, the most unexpected things can lead to profound shifts in our perspectives and experiences. For me, that unexpected thing was a sudden and intense craving for cinnamon bears.

Now, I’m not usually one to crave candy, let alone cinnamon bears. But this craving was different. It was persistent, insistent, and almost inexplicable. It was as if my brain was trying to tell me something; to unlock a hidden part of myself that had been dormant for far too long.

It’s been a little over a week since this craving began, and it’s been a fascinating journey of self-discovery. I’ve never experienced anything quite like it. As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve always struggled to connect smells and tastes with memories or emotions. It’s like that part of my brain was blocked, perhaps due to past traumas or the complexities of my neurodivergent wiring.

But this cinnamon bear craving was different. It was a powerful sensory experience that seemed to bypass those blocks and tap into a deeper emotional core.

So, I decided to indulge. I went out, bought a bag of cinnamon bears, and cautiously took the first bite. And something remarkable happened. A wave of calm washed over me, a sense of peace and familiarity that I hadn’t experienced in a long time. It was as if the cinnamon bears had unlocked a hidden doorway, revealing a part of myself that had been buried beneath layers of trauma and insecurity.

In the days and weeks since, I’ve noticed a profound shift in my emotional state and overall confidence. It wasn’t just a fleeting feeling; it was a deep-seated sense of self-assuredness that radiated outward, affecting how I interacted with the world.

It’s fascinating how our senses can have such a profound impact on our emotions and even our sense of self. The olfactory and gustatory systems, responsible for smell and taste, are directly connected to the brain’s emotional and memory centers—the amygdala and hippocampus. This close proximity allows smells and tastes to trigger powerful and vivid memories, often accompanied by strong emotional responses.

In my case, the cinnamon bears seem to have unlocked not just a forgotten memory (though I’m still waiting for that!), but a deeper sense of joy and confidence that had been dormant for far too long. It’s as if the sensory experience of those chewy, cinnamon-flavored candies bypassed my usual mental blocks and tapped into a wellspring of positive emotions and self-acceptance.

This experience has also made me realize the power of sensory tools in regulating emotions, something that’s often emphasized in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). DBT teaches us to use our senses to ground ourselves in the present moment, to manage intense emotions, and to cultivate a sense of calm and well-being.

Perhaps the cinnamon bears, through their unique sensory properties, acted as a form of self-soothing or emotional regulation, inadvertently triggering a release of endorphins or other neurochemicals associated with pleasure and well-being.

Whatever the underlying mechanism, it’s clear that the cinnamon bear experience has had a profound and positive impact on my life. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most unexpected things can lead to profound shifts in our perspectives and experiences. It’s a testament to the power of curiosity, self-exploration, and the willingness to embrace the unknown.

So, if you’re ever feeling lost, stuck, or disconnected from yourself, I encourage you to explore the world of sensory experiences. You never know what hidden treasures you might uncover.
