Freedom, As I Know It

What does freedom mean to you?

There’s a version of freedom I was sold.
It came dressed in ambition and polished with approval.
It said: be more, do more, control more.
It measured liberty in output and influence.

But freedom isn’t loud.
It doesn’t shout its arrival.
It doesn’t need a brand.

To me, freedom is control of self.
The kind that doesn’t flinch when tested.
Not dominance… but discipline.
Not escape… but sovereignty.

I am not ruled by emotion, though I feel deeply.
I am not ruled by society, though I live within it.
I am not ruled by relationships, though I value connection.
I am not ruled by bias, though I’ve had to learn where they once ruled me.

True freedom is internal.
It’s the ability to choose without coercion—
not just from systems outside me,
but from reflexes within me.

Freedom is not being shaped by every trend,
not being pulled by invisible strings of approval, guilt, or scarcity.
Not being moved by the winds of bias—cognitive, cultural, or relational.

Freedom is self-direction in a world that profits off your distraction.

I don’t seek to control others.
I don’t need to be above or ahead.
I only need to know that I am not drifting on someone else’s current.

And no, I can’t do it all.
But I can do what is aligned.
What is mine.

That is enough.
That is power.
That… is freedom.
